My Core French class is first period. This means that we are constantly interupted by morning announcements and late students for the first 5-10 minutes. While everyone is getting settled in, there is a tendancy to just talk amongst themselves instead of getting out their work and starting the morning.
I have created Bell Work that goes directly with our Printemps unit; 11 pages of specifically curated activities, 3 activities per page, to jump start their French brains and get them in the academic mind-set.

You will notice that the instructions are in English. This because many of my students can not read French, or claim they are not capable, and therefore they shut down. I have intentionally added the activity instructions in English to avoid 25 hands asking “What do I do Mme?”. This leaves me free to help those coming in late, set up for attendance and say good morning to all of my students without interruptions.
Each page is meant to take 5-10 minutes to complete, and has 3 activities per page. They range from filling in the letter gaps in order to complete the word pictured, to putting the words in the right order to complete a full sentence, and even a short paragraph with comprehension questions and a space to draw the story. I like this activity the best, because it makes them think about what they have read and even if they aren’t able to read and answer the questions with words, they can show understanding in their pictures.
I have also avoided Easter language, as not all students celebrate that particular holiday. This is reflected in all my units and Long Range Plan .
