Je Me Presente – First days of School

The first few days of school are arguably some of the hardest. No one knows each other, everyone’s brains are rusty from summer break, and it’s still incredibly warm outside. Je Me Presente is the perfect way to gauge where the students’ french-skills are, and a great way to get to know them a little more.

Being new to a group of students is never easy, but new to a school or French Program is 10x worse. We never know what the kids were taught last year or how much they retained over the course of the year. I have found formative assessments to be too formal, and so close to the start of the year, they put a certain trend on how they feel the year will go.

We start with a self portrait – I reiterate that this isn’t art class. They automatically get an A for Effort in terms of their artistic creations. I want to see how much they enjoy colouring the cover page, or drawing out what they have written/read.

An anchor chart is provided with a grand list of vocabulary that is required to complete the assignment. Anything from hobbies, appearance, family memebers and so on. Students will need a working knowledge of Porter, Avoir and Etre.

The package includes an Objectives page, detailed Rubric, Fill in the Blank options, and Lined page for final copy.

As a Core French teacher, I know their homeroom teacher is going to ask them to do a similar project so they already have the mindset of who they are and what makes them unique from their classmates. We take this one step further and ask students to remember how to form complete sentences using properly formed questions, and an anchor chart with most/all possible answers given to them.
